Bring Your “A” Game: Mount Olive Celebrates STEAM
You might’ve heard the term “STEM” thrown around before, but what in the world is the new “STEAM” that people are talking about?
STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—is commonly used in the education field. The term is derived from the STEM Education Coalition, which is an organization created to raise awareness for the importance of STEM education in the global marketplace. STEM has been emphasized for well over a decade within the education field, so our current students grew up in a STEM-intense system.
Some argued that because of the heavy focus on STEM, there is no longer room for creativity. So in schools, there has been a recent shift towards the inclusion of the arts, which is what the A in STEAM stands for. In Mount Olive High School, we embrace the new STEAM curriculum. The addition of a state-of-the-art recording studio and the new Marauder Innovation Learning Lab (MILL) shows that Mount Olive is ready to experiment artistically. It won’t be hard to get creative with the Rock and Roll Academy, thirty 3D printers, and futuristic lab space.
On Tuesday, November 15th, Mount Olive was pleased to invite guests such as MakerBot, Siemens, Picatinny Arsenal, and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) to set up exhibits with representative and literature regarding college and career pathways in the STEAM fields. We had experts in design, social media, business, medicine, and more come talk to our students about having a future in their respective fields.
It’s exciting to see the great new changes that are leading Mount Olive to a STEAM-orientated school. Make sure to take advantage of these opportunities. You may just find yourself with a new favorite hobby like designing or a potential career path in a field like aerospace engineering!
