Have Yourself a Healthy Holiday

When you think about Thanksgiving, what comes to mind? Ideas of decadent turkey, creamy mashed potatoes, and tangy cranberry sauce likely dominate your thoughts. Unfortunately, however, these choices often induce long stomach aches, digestive troubles, and weight gain. This holiday season, don’t worry about feeling bloated and lethargic - go organic!

I recently discovered the phenomenon of organic food the other day whilst strolling through my local Weis in Flanders. I was simply amazed at the all-around benefits of choosing these foods over traditional, unhealthier options. For example, the brand Dr. Praeger’s produces a kale veggie burger that is out of this world! A box of four (4) patties is sold for $4.99 at Weis. This is favorably comparable to the price of one (1) medium Big Mac meal at the International Trade Center (ITC) McDonald’s in Budd Lake, at a whopping $9.50!

For further comparison, the nutritional value of the kale burger undeniably outweighs that of the Big Mac. While the kale burger has only 120 calories (240 with a bun), the Big Mac has an astonishing 540 calories in one serving. That’s roughly 4.5 times more calories than a kale burger! However, it doesn’t stop at just calories; while the Big Mac contains 28g of fat, the kale burger has only 6g, and the kale burger contains 32 less grams of carbohydrates (46g vs. 14g).

Clearly, organic/healthy food options are incredibly beneficial to both your health and your wallet. So, maybe this Thanksgiving, substitute that sugary cranberry sauce for a taste of Pacific Foods’ Organic Whole Berry Sauce; or perhaps even trade out that fatty turkey for some of Field Roast’s veggie-rich Celebration Roast. Your stomach will thank you later!
