LYRICS:
Ooh, I'm not ready
Ooh, I'm not ready
Ooh, I'm not ready
Ooh, I'm not ready
Snakes are biting at my heels
The worries that refuse to let us go
I’ve been kicking them away
Been hoping not to let them take control
Ooh, I’m not ready
Drink to escape their bites
Show me distraction
Even for just one night
'Cause it's easier to bury
My head in the sand sometimes
Yes, it's easier to bury
My head in the sand sometimes
And I know, I know, I know
It's not the right way to go
But I pray for the ground to swallow me whole
Ooh, I'm not ready
Ooh, I'm not ready
Now these days are feeling dark
We're struggling to figure out last year
When the woman on the news keeps saying things that no one wants to hear
Ooh, I’m not ready
Drink to escape our minds
Show me distraction
Even for just one night
'Cause it's easier to bury
My head in the sand sometimes
Yes, it's easier to bury
My head in the sand sometimes
And I know, I know, I know
It's not the right way to go
But I pray for the ground to swallow me whole
Yes, I pray for the ground to swallow me whole
Ooh, I'm not ready
Ooh, I'm not ready
"Come on, boys. Let's go tear this place apart!"
'Cause I know, 'cause I know life is simple when
I can just ignore it all
'Cause I know, 'cause I know, 'cause I know
Life is simple when
I can just ignore it all
'Cause I know, 'cause I know, 'cause I know
If I’m not ready
Snakes will consume me whole
If I'm not steady
Maybe they'll take control
But it's easier to bury
My head in the sand sometimes
Yes, it's easier to bury
My head in the sand sometimes
I know, I know, I know
It's not the right way to go
But I pray for the ground to swallow me whole
Yes, I know, I know, I know
It's not the right way to go
But I pray for the ground to swallow me whole

Bastille, a british indie pop band released their newest album early September with 19 songs on it. Each song in the album is unique, using excerpts of people talking or different instruments to give it character. The one song I chose from this album is “Snakes.” Many songs from Wild World hold much meaning that can be interpreted in many ways such as the theme portrayed in “Snakes”. This song describes the singer being fearful of ‘snakes’ or worries he has throughout his life. He constantly tries to avoid these fears and anxieties that chase him and bother him daily. He tries other attempts to take his mind off of what is bothering him the

most. The song expresses how the singer buries his head in the sand even though he knows it isn’t the right thing to do, it is easier to just ignore his fears. It is a struggle for the singer to deal with his problems head-on and much easier to avoid and refuse to deal with them altogether. He is absorbed in his insecurity that he will not be ready to face his problems when they arise.
This song can relate to many people, as it’s common to problems they would rather ignore. I know in my own life there have been anxieties or fears in which it would be easy to not deal with. This song expresses how many have internal conflicts on doing something that is easy and simple versus a problem where you have to show courage and determination to try and get through. Not only does this song hold a deeper meaning that connects to many emotions and conflicts within us but it very unique and interesting to listen to.
“Snakes” by Bastille is a great song and is very relatable. I’d give it a strong 5/5 stars and hope you take a chance to listen to it too!
