If you’re looking for a great way to spend a fall evening, look no further than MOHS’s production of “Hello, Dolly!”
“Hello, Dolly!” is a story that follows Mrs. Dolly Levi, a matchmaker who secretly seeks to marry Mr. Horace Vandergelder, a half-a-millionaire from Yonkers, New York. However, Dolly has matched Mr. Vandergelder with Mrs. Irene Molloy, a widow who works in a hat shop in New York. Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker, two men who work for Mr. Vandergelder, seek to leave Yonkers and find adventure in the city of New York at the same time that Mr. Vandergelder heads to New York to meet Mrs. Molloy. Of course, chaos ensues as matches are made, romance commences, and adventures occur in the big city.
The rehearsals for “Hello, Dolly!” have been in full swing since the second week of school, and students are having a blast working on the show. Ensemble members Max Wagner, Christopher Carlstrom, Jared Case, Victor Cabaero, and Zach Weiner, shared their excitement with me during rehearsal. Case, a freshman, describes drama club as “an opportunity for freshmen to make new friends.” Cabaero, a junior, agrees and says that he is happy that drama club “allows you to be dedicated to something you care about.”
While the show may be fun, it is also hard work. Senior Anne Hattem, who is playing the lead role of Dolly Levi, has a lot on her plate. She says, “It’s been hard work to memorize lines, but it’s really fun to have my first big lead. Interacting with the cast is a new and eye opening experience.” Jack Spinosa is soaking up the fun in his senior year by playing the role of Ambrose and serving as a dance captain. He says, “Being a senior in drama club is a very rewarding experience. It shows how I ‘stuck with it’ for four years, and now I get to work with the underclassmen.”
This show brings back fond memories for director Mr. Bosch, who performed as Horace Vandergelder in his high school’s production of “Hello, Dolly!” with Broadway star Laura Benanti playing the lead role of Dolly. When asked what he wants audiences to know about the show, he said, “Carol Channing, who played the original Dolly on Broadway, has performed the role over 5,000 times all over the world.”
